Why Media?
We have been sensitive from the beginning to a media environment which has simultaneously become more hostile and fragmented. This has led to a blurring of fact-finding and commentary, to more and more media control in the hands of fewer and fewer people, and to the proliferation of outlets committed more to spreading hate speech than hope, to spreading disinformation than insight.
When we launched “Matching Points” the idea was to engage the United Nations and its media community as both another pair of monitoring eyes and a set of critical eyes: critical in the sense of “evaluative” rather than merely negative. After a quarter century inside the UN, we have heard our share of patently false and misleading statements by the diplomatic community and have done our small part to “finish the sentences” of diplomats so as to better reflect the realities they are deliberating on. This has often been thankless work, but we have never done it alone and we certainly have not done it deliberately disconnected from other stakeholders.
We have for years collaborated with media organizations as content providers and consultants, including Bill Miller’s Global Connections Television, a now defunct media initiative known as Media Global, and through other media initiatives in several global regions. We have monitored and advocated in UN spaces on a regular basis over many years through our policy blog (https://global-action-pw.org/) and our twitter account (@globalactonpw). We have also made numerous contributions to publications together with a range of global collaborators seeking to better understand multilateral spaces while communicating the value and challenge of those spaces to their own constituents. Many of those publications can be found on this site.
As you can read below, while we are not a professional media organization at the UN (and have never claimed to be) we have assumed a responsibility to carefully assess what we see and share the fruits of our monitoring work with others. For us, this is a sacred trust alongside other trusts, and we continue to discharge it with that understanding in mind.
